DiscNS Juniors

The DiscNS Juniors Committee is a subcommittee of DiscNS dedicated to promoting youth ultimate opportunities. At this time, disc golf opprtunities for youth are overseen by the Disc Golf Committee and integrated into local disc golf clubs.

 

Mission

DiscNS Juniors strives to provide low commitment, low cost, inclusive, and engaging opportunities to U19 ultimate players who want to develop their skills, meet new people, and participate in local frisbee opportunities such as practices, scrimmages & tournaments.

 

What does DiscNS Juniors do?

  • Organizes and promotes the DiscNS High School Program.
  • Connects high school coaches with opportunities for Utimate-spectific NCCP certifications offered in Nova Scotia by the DiscNS Coaching Committee.
  • Facilitates the DiscNS Juniors team that competes in the Sunday League of Halifax Ultimate between June-August.
  • Supports the New Scotland Blues, the provincial competitve ultimate club for athletes ages 14-18.

DiscNS Juniors Committee is looking for qualified coaches to support the 2024/25 "New Scotland Blues" Junior Ultimate Frisbee Touring Team. Please read through all responsibilities and qualifications before submitting your application. 

"New Scotland Blues" Coaching Responsibilities

The DiscNS Juniors Committee is seeking interested people for the roles of head and assistant coaches for both Open and Women’s Junior Provincial Touring Teams. In your application, please indicate if you have a preference for gender-matching team and coaching role. The 2024/25 season will run from September 2024 to August 2025. Coach selection will be completed by the end of August 2024. 

Coaches will be responsible for the following:

  • Organizing and running touring team prospect camps in October 2024 and January 2025. This will indicate level of interest in the teams and give both the players and coaches an initial opportunity to interact and ask any questions. DiscNS Juniors Committee will assist in communicating dates to students and schools across Nova Scotia. 

  • Organizing and running tryouts for the team(s) in early 2025.

  • Coaches are expected to set expectations and schedules for the team (including booking field times).

  • Create and execute practice plans.

  • Coordinate resources and any additional services required.

  • Organize tournament registrations and be available for all tournaments. 

  • Coaches are expected to work with DiscNS Junior Committee for any fundraising events or plans. Equipment (cones, discs, etc.) will be provided by DiscNS.

*The only mandatory tournament is 2025 CUCs but it is highly encouraged that teams enter local tournaments, where possible. Scheduled games against High Tide NB are also strongly encouraged.

Coaches must present themselves in a professional manner as a representative of DiscNS. They are responsible for reporting updates to the DiscNS Juniors Committee to ensure the appropriate support can be provided by the PSO.

Qualifications

  • Must have prior experience in Ultimate Frisbee

  • Must be NCCP - Competition Introduction Certified

  • Must have access to transportation

  • Ensure availability for Junior CUCs 2025

  • Must complete/provide a vulnerable sector and background check

  • Experience coaching/teaching school aged children but not necessary

  • This role requires a high degree of independent practice, skills assessment ability, and the ability to implement & execute a class plan

  • Experience in offering brief, supportive intervention strategies focusing on conflict mitigation

  • Ability to navigate and de-escalate situations

  • Knowledge of social determinants of health/social context and its importance in coaching/instructing is an asset

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
